Bender drove for three hours. I didn’t ask where we were going and they didn’t tell me. The signs said we were in Pennsylvania somewhere, and that was good enough for me, at least for now. I sniffed the air every thirty seconds now, had to remind myself of it until it became a habit, and nobody had followed us.

By the time Bender stopped in front of two huge gates in a very quiet neighborhood, the sun had just started to rise. The house in front of us was four stories high with a dark roof and white exterior, huge windows and doors that screamed of money. The smell of spells was suffocating—they had at least ten different kinds around there, but nothing stopped us when Bender drove the car to the side of the house. A white garage door slid open, though I hadn’t even seen him press a button somewhere, and in no time, we were enveloped in darkness.

Bender let out a sigh of relief. “We’ll be fine for now.”

“Where are we?” I finally asked. Wayne had already gotten out of the car, and when the overhead lights turned on, I found her at the end of the huge garage by the switch. The place was massive, with four cars already parked inside, and with enough space for four more. Definitely fancy. I’d only seen garages like that in movies. Did Bender or Wayne really own that place?

“We’re in my sister’s house,” Bender said reluctantly as he dragged his feet to Wayne and the door, and I followed. “She and her family are out of town for a while, and we can crash here while they’re gone. It’s the safest place for us right now.”

I would have agreed if I hadn’t been in even more protected places before—like Finn’s offices. That didn’t stop Haworth from finding me.

But the ECU was not Haworth; otherwise they would have found him a long time ago. Now, Haworth was dead, and my sister would have come with me if she’d wanted anything to do with me.

The inside of the house was even fancier than the garage. Huge hallway with four doors to the sides, a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, paintings all over the walls—the kind that you couldn’t figure out without focusing real hard—and a huge stairway to the left of the main doors.

Wayne and Bender walked through the first door on the left, and I followed them. The kitchen and living area were both huge. It was cold in there, colder than it had been on the outside, and I thought, it must cost a fortune to heat this place in winter. Such an ordinary thought when my whole world was falling down around me.

“Sit. I’ll fix us something to eat,” Bender said, pointing at the kitchen island that separated the cabinets from the living area. Wayne and I sat across from one another on the comfortable leather stools. My stomach was growling, though I didn’t want to eat. I kept on looking around me with unease.
